I rebuilt everything in /usr/src, and ls no longer works.  
ls -l works fine.
ls chomps for as much as 2 minutes, then fails to produce output.

Any likely bets?  I'm rebuilding again, after a make clean, but if that
doesn't do it, I'll be confused.
