Under HP-UX on the hp300, the info for something like c7d0s0 broke down 
to something like this:

	"Controller at select-code 7, device at target 0, slice 0"

Select-code is a very HP-specific thing, and their SCSI subsystem didn't 
have anything nearly as cool as a "scsibus" abstraction.  "Slice", of 
course, meant "partition", and was quite meaningless on anything but the 
hp800 (the only machine I've ever seen which HP-UX supports partitions 
on, and it's probably for historical reasons .. the 700s and 300s didn't).
Notice that this scheme of addressing doesn't even pay lip-service to LUNs.

Yah, this would be nice.  I know someone was working on this at one time, 
but I don't know the status of it right now...
