You're right, the Post Office Protocol only specifies transport of mails from a
server to the client, not back. you still have to use SMTP for this.

And for buffering mails: last time i've tried unplugging my machine from the
net outgoing mails were buffered until i replugged it. This was wis a vanilla
1.0 setup, unchanged /etc/sendmail.cf!
