I don't think ccd cares what's underneath it, actually.

Well, you lose _part_ of the benefit of ccd, but not all.  You lose
some of the performance gain, because you can't overlap operations, but
under the right conditions you can avoid some seeking.

More to the point, doing this allows you to treat (say) three small IDE
disks as a single big (well, bigg_er_) filesystem..  ccd ain't just for
performance gains.

It'd also allow you to read packs that were written striped or
concatenated...though this is probably a marginal point.
