I was the one who submitted that PR, BTW... I compiled a kernel with the
driver that was recently committed (which isn't exactly the same as the
one in my PR; some changes were needed to make it work on the Alpha, I
think), and everything still works great for me. iozone reports about
6MB/s writing and 5.6MB/s reading my Quantum Atlas drive (7200rpm).

There have been some minor changes to the FreeBSD driver since I submitted
the PR... people who are having problems with the new driver might try
applying the patches I just sent to current-users.
