"Prior art" (terminology stolen from mycroft ;). Other systems use
/var/log/authlog, /var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog,
/var/log/maillog, etc, and people may be used to that.

If you prefer a different syslog.conf to the default installed on a
new system (which I do, BTW), then just set it up. But, out of the box
it makes sense to a) follow what's been done in previous releases and
other current systems (Solaris, etc), and b) if we add new
functionality that's similar to other systems (e.g, authlog), then for
ease of migration, we should go with the flow.

PS: Your ideas make sense to me. Like I wrote, I have a personalised
{new,}syslog.conf, but whilst *I* feel that it's ``cleaner'', it may
annoy others because I changed it just for the sake of ``luke's
preferred cleaner way''...
