I don't have the jumper settings handy, as the drive is located at my
other office. I do remember having to back off some of the more advanced
settings on my ADAPTEC 1542-CF, or I had the same symptoms as you. I am
just running GNU-Tar for backups now, but I will be switching to Amanda
soon.

The tar command I use is something like:
