One further point - all our machines are on a 100BaseT network (SMG or
Lantronix cards) with all disks served from an Alphaserver 1000A + RAID
+ Digital Unix.

But as a test I have just moved one NetBSD machine (Pentium 133) to a
10baseT segment and found that it shut down cleanly 6 out of 8
times. ( Hanging after Syncing disks twice. )

Putting it back on the 100BaseT segment it hung 8 times out of 8
during the shutdown.

So there appears to be some timing issue involved.
