IIRC, the tar format doesn't have room for replace functionality (as
it's designed to be streamed), so the `proper' way to replace a file in
a tar archive is to add another copy to the end of the archive. Thus
tar keeps reading in case this has been done. --fast-read allows you to
indicate to tar that you know that this hasn't been done, but is not
correct behavior in the general case, IMHO.
