I did a "make build", which in theory did a "make cleandir" as one of
its first acts.  (I do see the "make cleandir" call in the logs.)
I do also see a make cleandir call in the egcs directory with the
.depend and all the *.o's being removed.

Not having any better choices, I'll try to recompile the usual
suspects.
