dunno about `vs.', but last i used Linux/Alpha, 2.1.1??,
1. You cannot compile a development kernel without SMP.
2. egcs-1.1.1 breaks SMP on Alpha only, because the code relies on gcc
2.7.2.x bugs
3. gcc 2.7.2.x and anything built with it is unreliable on the Alpha
so, i would put this in Pot #2--Demonic Wintel/RedHat Conspiracies.
