Ah, I found a reply to an earlier question about this from
enami tsugutomo, who suggested editing sys/dev/elink3.c to
change the "#if 1"s in eptxstat() to "#if 0".

I did this, and rebuilt the kernel, and the problem no longer 
is recurring.
