So, is this a problem with softdep, or something else (maybe
UBC)?  I wasn't sure which earlier messages you were
referring to...

(I just attempted the same thing  -- gzip'ing and gunzip'ing
a tar of /usr/src -- on my 1.5S machine, without any
problem; I'm *not* using softdep at the moment)
