I had it working not too long ago, but I'm not sure if it was with the
release-1-5 branch or an older version of -current (most likely both). I
needed to set APM_DISABLE_INTERRUPTS=0 or else the machine would hang if I
changed power states while in suspend mode.

By the way, the laptop is an AST Ascentia 910N.
