Performance.  

(and to a much lesser extent, compatability with the default used by the
authors and maintainers of these programs)

The r* commands are still perfectly safe to use on any private and
trusted network (be it a physically private network, a well firewalled
LAN, or something like an IPsec VPN), and they're much faster,
especially for older hardware.
