IIRC fxp(4) has issues on pre EV56 (the AS500/266 is AFAIK EV5) Alphas,
because these CPUs have no BWX extension. There was a thread about this
at the end of last year on port-alpha or tech-kern.

I would recommend fpa(4) for 100 MBit/s network. ;-)
