As I said the wd* drives got attached, but there are a few more kernel devices
missing at that point.

Correct, the hang appears in the kernel.

Right now I supect something broken with the timer, because it looks like
it is now in some tsleep threads and that takes a long time.

Does the '>' from the ps/l output mean it is currently in this thread?
If so then the kernel is running with a 'zombie' and softclk/0
