I had the same issue and applying the patch from joerg:
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/current-users/2009/11/09/msg011119.html
fixed it (booting with acpi enabled now works well).
This (acpi on via chips) seems to cause quite some issues and I wonder
when this bug gets fixed?
(or the fix from joerg used)
