Thanks for this information and the link to the manual, that's good to
know for further investigation.

Using VBoxManage, I switched off ACPI, and things got worse: I got
kernel panics from process 203.203 (sh) when it called cnopen, as well
as from process 0.2, in the idle loop.

These kernel panics looked so strange to me that I stopped my
experiments there. Do they make sense to someone more involved in kernel
development?
