I'm using a 730, the exact same model Paul has I think, and don't really
see any issues, other than that it isn't quite powerful enough for what
I'd like.

I suggested the same.   My kernel config doesn't even include "options MODULAR"

I haven't seen an X related crash in essentially forever - but as I told
Paul in the off-list reply, nor have I updated the X server (or libraries)
since before -10 was branched (long before it was released).   I run HEAD
for the kernel (with random binary and library updates as absolutely
required) and otherwise leave userland alone, until I am ready for a major
upgrade (which will involve booting to a different / and /usr and /usr/pkg
so I can just return to the current setup).

In fact, I think only 2 things kill my system without my intent - power
fail longer than the UPS can handle, and disconnecting busy USB drives...
(I try and avoid the latter whenever possible, the former is beyond my
cotrol).
