I think you'd have to admit that for the Client's purposes, it's interesting to know whether a rename is going to overwrite an existing file or not. Irrespective of the Unix and VMS ways of doing things, it seems sensible to have a normal rename (which refuses to overwrite existing files) and a rename -f (which will overwrite where appropriate). *How* the server goes about providing those two very generalised facilities is a matter for the server...
