This is apparently fixed by adding

CONFIGURE_ENV+=		ac_cv_path_echopath=${TOOLS_ECHO:Q}
USE_TOOLS+=		echo

Can anybody explain why using a plain "echopath" like for "diffpath" 
in sysutils/radmind/Makefile doesn't work here, and it has to be 
ac_cv_path_echopath? Ah, autoconf...
