Did you know that the := operator behaves funnily? Example:
exclam != echo ${DEFINED_LATER:Q} value
colon := ${DEFINED_LATER} value
DEFINED_LATER = later
show:
@echo ${exclam}
@echo ${colon}
Don't expect them to be the same.
