I am not the least bit clear on what's going on - I was reacting to using a variable in a makefile when a) I had no reason to expect it to be defined and b) I got a complaint from make. Probably the thing to do is to include NEED_STRLCPY=YES in MAKE_ENV on Linux from pkgsrc Makefile, and have the package's makefile switch on that. I'll try that now.
