You are probably correct that this is a better approach. I did not know about OVERRIDE_DIRDEPTH and my patch only fixes DragonFly. I imagine other platforms are probably still unable to get out of the configure phase.
If Adam doesn't implement this himself, I'll try to take another look at it later on, but I'm running out of time to deal with this stuff for a while.
