Sorry for the very late reply, I only managed today to attempt an
update of my packages. I'd like to thank everyone who has chipped in
to provide a fix for this obscure problem.

bmake didn't like it:

bmake: "/pkgsrc/source/pkgsrc/devel/glib2/Makefile" line 49: Malformed
conditional (${ABI} == 32)

/usr/bin/make on NetBSD 5.1 doesn't have a problem here. In both
cases, ABI is not defined. Does bmake need an update? Anyway, after
adding "ABI=32" to mk.conf, bmake digests the Makefile. I'll keep you
informed about further problems or (hopefully) a successful build.
