Please can this be backed out until there is a resolve for
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.binutils.bugs/21906

this causes the following sort of linker error on SunOS:
> ld: fatal: relocation error: file src/src_libstdbuf_so-libstdbuf.o: section [8].rel.text.startup: invalid relocation type: 0x2b
