Well that's interesting: I'm running sun-jre15/jdk15 on a somewhat
out-of-date -current (4.99.9: pre-removal of SAs) with
emul.linux.kern.osrelease = 2.4.18 with no problems:

    $ sysctl emul.linux.kern.osrelease
    emul.linux.kern.osrelease = 2.4.18
    $ /usr/pkg/java/sun-1.5/bin/java -version -verbose
    java version "1.5.0_11"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_11-b03)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_11-b03, mixed mode, sharing)

Sounds like it might be something deeper?  File a PR?
