Indeed.  I now have a USB keyboard attached.  The good news: the USB keyboard 
works, including arrows, paging etc.  The bad news: the laptop keyboard is 
completely messed up.  The 'z' key is the space bar,  'x' is a hyphen, etc.

I'll try Blair's suggestion next -- using the wip packages.
