Hmm... I've always thought that symlinks existed to solve these kinds
of problems. Is it at all possible to keep the pkgsrc tools out of the
path (both in base installation and pkgsrc), and then use symlinks
somewhere along the path to point to the appropriate[*] tools?

This would allow man pages to be symlinked as well.

[*] One would write a simple shell script which tests for the existence
of the pkgsrc pkg_install tools. If they exist, symlink to them. If they
don't, symlink to the base tools. If done correctly, the end user would
never have to run this script; it should be run only after pkgsrc
pkg_install is installed, or after it has been removed.
