On the other hand, I agree with Aleksey and stated that on the mailing lists before: the "subst" check for text files should go. It has caused problems several times already.
In that case trace down all *-config binaries in the system and except them from the check. Just because some systems always seem to manage to get a broken file doesn't mean that the check is useless.
What type of files are checked for binaryness and for what reasons?
