I use Debian Etch (stable) and I needed GIMP 2.4 so I decided to try pkgsrc. This is my second time of using pkgsrc on Linux and I'm disappointed again by not enough documentation about pkgsrc on Linux. I think some of the things below should at least be mentioned in pkgsrc documentation, so that people don't waste hours finding such things.
I used to run a mixed stable/testing Debian with not a lot of trouble, have you tried that route? You might also check out Martin Krafft's very good _The Debian System_ for hints about how to configure the dpkg/apt system to get a particular version of a software package. I don't recall the details of how to do it but it might be less labor-intensive.
Just a thought. GB +-----------------------------------------------------+ Glenn Becker - burningc%sdf.lonestar.org@localhost SDF Public Access UNIX System - http://sdf.lonestar.org +-----------------------------------------------------+
