The reasons why are lost somewhere in the depths of my mind, but I used
the following:
ENV=/home/$LOGNAME/.env SHELL=/bin/ksh \
PATH=$PATH:/usr/pkg/bin:$HOME/bin vncserver -depth 16 :$1
