That's true, but for your script to be portable across Ruby installations, you would have needed to to this anyway.
I think the benefits of more easily creating packages for Ruby extensions will outweigh this difficulty. In my spare time yesterday, I packaged at least a dozen useful Ruby projects (merb, camping, builder, markaby, etc.) that are distributed as gems. I'm hoping to see an explosion of Ruby project imports after the freeze is over, and really make Ruby more easy to use from pkgsrc for everyone.
