/etc/mk.conf gets in the way of building a new kernel

Is there a way to have a pkgsrc-specific "/etc/mk.conf?"  For example,
I notice there
is a "/usr/pkg/etc/mk.conf."  Can I just have that one, and do away
with /etc/mk.conf
altogether?

If I don't move (or remove) /etc/mk.conf, then when I go to build a
custom kernel,
make encounters a bunch of fatal errors (malformed conditionals).
