Great that you found it out the hard way... The easy way
is "make makepatchsum".

My impression is that he did only read the text behind your
first link, but not the patch behind the second. They
are unrelated. So the new xbl-1.1.6 does only change
the "bigfont" looked for per default, but the replacement
code is still broken.
Anyway, I'll commit an update to 1.1.6 and the patch to
fix the replacement stuff.
