pkgsrc is migrating from teTeX to TeX Live 2008. TeX engines were all
updated (print/web2c). TeX/LaTeX formats were updated as well except
metapost and omega/lambda formats. Most of basic fonts and style
packages are those in TeX Live 2008, but other, less-popular packages
are still teTeX's.
You still need TeX Live packages and teTeX packages to have a
"complete" TeX environment. The easist way to install them is to
install print/teTeX. It does not include packages that were not in
teTeX (e.g., tex-IEEEtran) and those should be installed manually.
Do not use texlive-* packages in pkgsrc-wip. They are not compatible
with tex-* and teTeX-* packages in pkgsrc.

I've been using them for the last six months and never noticed any
issue.

See http://www.tug.org/texlive/build.html. There is a volunteer
builder for NetBSD/i386.
