I just noticed the same problem on a NetBSD/i386 5.0_STABLE system.
Having a closer look revealed that it's the default fontconfig
configuration (/etc/fonts/...) shipping with NetBSD which causes the
problem. At least removing 10-autohint.conf and 10-unhinted.conf from
/etc/fonts/conf.d fixed the problem for me.
Making /etc/fonts a symlink to ${PKG_SYSCONFBASE}/fontconfig (or vice
versa) probably makes sense in this case.
However, NetBSD's fontconfig configuration seems outdated. I'll
probably open another thread on a non-pkgsrc list soon...
