It can't be that bad, here are two memory starved machines running more or
less -current:
NetBSD 5.99.38 (STAR) #2: Sun Aug 1 19:20:07 CEST 2010
martin%night-porter.duskware.de@localhost:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/STAR
total memory = 32384 KB
avail memory = 29504 KB
timecounter: Timecounters tick every 10.000 msec
timecounter: Timecounter "i8254" frequency 1193182 Hz quality 100
Generic PC
mainbus0 (root)
cpu0 at mainbus0: Intel 486-class
eisa0 at mainbus0
ahb0 at eisa0 slot 1: Adaptec AHA-1742A SCSI
...
NetBSD 5.99.38 (GENERIC) #0: Sun Aug 1 19:24:04 CEST 2010
martin%night-porter.duskware.de@localhost:/usr/src/sys/arch/shark/compile/GENERIC
total memory = 32768 KB
avail memory = 27156 KB
timecounter: Timecounters tick every 15.625 msec
mainbus0 (root)
cpu0 at mainbus0: SA-110 step S (SA-1 core)
cpu0: DC enabled IC enabled WB enabled EABT
cpu0: 16KB/32B 32-way Instruction cache
cpu0: 16KB/32B 32-way write-back Data cache
Both machines do fine and can build packages - wouldn't try FireFox of course.
For 5.0 the i386 would probably not do very good with GENERIC, but a reasonable
selective custom kernel is fine.
