I'm not sure this relates to your problem but make sure that your newly
built gcc34 and pkgsrc's libtool use the same ld (Sun's of GNU).

If they disagree about their ld, building Xrender may fail as here

And if this failure was unseen (for any reason) to the build process
you'll see the error message you've got significantly later.
