This is may be a good idea for people who want to learn how things  
work together (kernel, libc, libraries, programs), but I wouldn't use  
it on a production system personally. For most people the pre-compiled  
packages are a lot more convenient most of the time, especially if you  
already know how things function and just want to get on with "real"  
work. Compiling from scratch (especially with manual dependency  
handling) gets old quickly.

If the OP wants to build a mental model of how things work this would  
be a good place to start, and then perhaps move onto Arch. One could  
perhaps just use a 'normal' distribution like Ubuntu or Fedora for day- 
to-day stuff, and do experimenting in a VM as time allows. (VirtualBox  
is supposedly pretty good if you don't want to shell out cash for  
VMware of Parallels.)

The BSDs (and pkgsrc?) are a bit between pre-compiled packages (RPMs,  
debs, etc.) and all-from-scratch.
