Option to create statically linked binaries

Is there an option to create a statically linked binary? Would such an option
be recursive (statically linking all the dependencies of the dependencies)? 

Such an option would be nice to create single all-in-one (albeit large) 
executables that could be run from a cd or usb stick without having to
worry about having all the libs installed first (e.g., toting around a copy
of Gimp or Firefox).
