firefox won't start, 2011Q2
I've just rebuilt all my pkg software with 2011Q2; I rebooted the
system to make sure that all running daemons are up to date. Now
invoking firefox results in an immediate exit (with exitcode zero);
nothing is issued on stdout or stderr, nothing is syslogged aside
from X logging the client connections and disconnections:
AUDIT: Tue Aug 2 18:32:54 2011: 893: client 12 connected from local host (
uid=1043 gid=100 ) Auth name: MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 ID: 179

I tried moving aside my ".mozilla" directory in case something in
there was causing a problem; that had no effect. I can report
that firefox *does* build a new .mozilla directory:
: quill[anne]:/home/a/anne ; \ls -R .mozilla/
firefox
.mozilla/firefox:
luzsle8c.default profiles.ini
.mozilla/firefox/luzsle8c.default:
bookmarks.html compatibility.ini mimeTypes.rdf prefs.js
chrome localstore.rdf permissions.sqlite startupCache
.mozilla/firefox/luzsle8c.default/chrome:
userChrome-example.css userContent-example.css
.mozilla/firefox/luzsle8c.default/startupCache:
I tried ktrace, but its not obvious (to me) at first glance what's
wrong, and debugging further would take a lot of time.
This is on:
NetBSD quill.porcupine.montreal.qc.ca 5.1_STABLE NetBSD 5.1_STABLE
(QUILL_I386-$Revision: 2010-01-05 $) #42: Sun Jul 17 23:02:15 EDT 2011
root%quill.porcupine.montreal.qc.ca@localhost:/disks/plain/nobackup/NetBSD-5.0.1/usr/obj/sys/arch/i386/compile/QUILL_I386
i386
Has anyone seen anything like this? If not, I may have to downgrade
to 2011Q1.
Note: I was at 2010Q4; 2011Q2 is indicated as "latest stable" on
the web site, so I was disappointed that "pkg_add" reported no
package available for almost all the software. I decided to just
build from scratch, but in retrospect I should have used a release
that had the packages already built. I have only one machine
running NetBSD, and it's my desktop. I can't afford to have it
not fully functional for very long. :-(
Sorry about the sparse detail; I usually like to look things up
for a while before I call for help, but without firefox, it's
painful.
Anne.
