Just an update - I replaced xulrunner-5.0nb1 with xulrunner-1.9.2.17nb1 
and replaced firefox-5.0nb1 with firefox-3.6.17nb1 and the problems are 
still present.  So there must be something else (some other depended-on 
package) doing this...
