I don't mind loosing some packages that I may be > using. I can reinstall them cleanly. So after following Taylor's advice to check/fix the db (which I agree with 100%) now you can use rm. For each file, think about it, and then rm. This happens to me too, occasionally (I have systems that have been continuously updated w/o a reinstall for a long time, probably 8 years at least, maybe longer).
