sunflower:reed$ pkg_info | grep firefox
firefox-8.0 Web browser with support for extensions

sunflower:reed$ sudo pkgin avail | grep firefox

firefox10-l10n-10.0.6 Language packs for www/firefox
firefox36-l10n-3.6.28 Language packs for www/firefox36

Well maybe firefox is bad example.
(I will send another email about that.)

Also see:

sunflower:reed$ sudo pkgin search pkgin
pkgin-0.6.2.2nb1 Apt / yum like tool for managing pkgsrc binary
packages

=: package is installed and up-to-date
<: package is installed but newer version is available
>: installed package has a greater version than available package

This is pkgin-0.6.2.2nb1.

Notice the key is shown but it doesn't indicate anything with =, <, or
>.

Also list doesn't list packages:

sunflower:reed$ sudo pkgin list
Requested list is empty.

I also tried with -f switch but no noticable change. What is -f supposed
to do?

(pkg_info does list them.)

The manual page has a TODO:

update Creates and populates the initial database. Must be
run
after the variable TODO something missing here
