Not sure about what to expect but I notice that in /usr/pkgsrc/x11/libXft

        make show-var VARNAME=USE_BUILTIN.libXft

produces just an empty line.

I have done that a couple of times, last time this morning after cvs updates in 
pkgsrc libXft and mk.
