Ah, I see. My fontconfig is from pkgsrc, and according to the pkgsrc
Makefile, depends on expat. But the instructions are to install fonts
after apps,

So I suppose it doesn't get fontconfig or expat 'in time', in that
scenario. Maybe there is a chicken and egg problem there, not sure.
Besides the applications I listed as not working in 'apps' (after some
research it seems these haven't been updated since the 1990's and make
calls to deprecated and obsolete functions, so commenting out seems to
work for me.) - and the necessity of installing the 'which' command to
start Xfce4 (the start script uses 'which' to locate applications),
everything works great and X looks wonderful on this laptop. Thanks alot
to everyone who makes pkgsrc such a valuable resource.
