Noticing the gnome2 replacement 'Mate' in wip, building wip/mate and
using mate-session instead of gnome-session in .xinitrc gets over the issue for me.  

In the meanwhile, I got over the two remaining packages with conflicts involving
gnome2 packages being replaced. I'll push these updates to wip.

Mate seems quite nice too, so perhaps it is a good time to pull all the mate related
packages into mainstream now.  At least it gets a +1 from me.
