It's a pretty ordinary non-login process, inherited from
'/etc/X11/xdm/Xsession' running as the user.

Immediately upon terminal/shell startup (user info obfuscated):
----------
_=/usr/bin/printenv
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/pkg/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R7/bin
XTERM_VERSION=XTerm(308)
SHELL=/bin/ksh
USER=${USER}
WINDOWPATH=5
DISPLAY=:0
HOME=${HOME}
PWD=${HOME}
XTERM_SHELL=/bin/ksh
TERM=xterm
WINDOWID=4194317
XTERM_LOCALE=C
LOGNAME=${LOGNAME}
----------
After sourcing ".profile" ('. ./.profile'):
----------
_=/usr/bin/printenv
CVSROOT=:pserver:anoncvs%anoncvs.netbsd.org@localhost:/cvsroot
NNTPSERVER=news.mylinuxisp.com
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/pkg/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R7/bin:/usr/X11R7/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/games:/usr/pkg/sbin:/usr/local/sbin:${HOME}/bin
XTERM_VERSION=XTerm(308)
SHELL=/bin/ksh
XAPPLRESDIR=/usr/pkg/lib/X11/app-defaults
OSTYPE=NetBSD
USER=${USER}
VISUAL=vi
WINDOWPATH=5
DISPLAY=:0
HOME=${HOME}
PWD=${HOME}
XTERM_SHELL=/bin/ksh
TERM=xterm
WINDOWID=4194317
EDITOR=vi
PAGER=less
XTERM_LOCALE=C
LOGNAME=${LOGNAME}
----------
Regardless of whether the user's ".profile" is sourced, a first-time
or no-config-changes 'fluxbox' hangs when started from the failsafe
xterm.
